The correspondent for the Emirati channel Al-Mashhad was injured for the first time on 16 December 2023 when he was hit by Israeli sniper fire while reporting from the northern Gaza Strip. The previous month, in November 2023, the 38-year-old journalist had revealed the existence of decomposing infant bodies in Gaza's al-Nasr hospital, which had been emptied of its staff by the Israeli army.

Reporters Without Borders compiled this Index of 167 countries by asking its partner organizations (14 freedom of expression groups from around the world) and its network of 130 correspondents, as well as journalists, researchers, legal experts and human rights activists, to answer 50 questions designed to assess a country’s level of press freedom.
