From 2016-2020, there were nearly 2,800 school bus crashes in the state. There were 225 students hurt — that's a tiny fraction of the 870,000 public school students in Minnesota.

North America’s three largest school bus manufacturers, Blue Bird, Thomas Built and Lion Electric, each have more than 500 buses on order or delivered to U.S. school districts.

The Dearborn school system currently has one electric school bus, but come this fall, 18 additional EV buses will be added to the lineup. However, they were awarded the money for the buses in 2022.

It’s up to inspectors who work for the Missouri State Highway Patrol to make sure all of those school buses are as safe as possible. Each year every school bus goes through an inspection process.

"Today, we're putting into operation 16 electric school buses," said Kevin Matthews, Head of Electrification for First Student. First Student is the district's transportation contractor.
