Nurses at Providence's eight Oregon hospitals approved new contracts on Monday after over six weeks of strike, ending what the state nurses union has described as the largest health care strike in state history.

Nurses on strike at all eight Providence hospitals in Oregon approved new labor contracts in a vote tallied Monday, clearing the way for their return to work. The result means that most striking nurses will return to Providence’s hospitals Thursday.

The agreements call for wage increases ranging from 20% to 42% over the life of the contract, with an immediate 16% to 22% raise upon ratification. It also aligns expiration dates at all the hospitals an augments the factors that go into staffing levels to take patient acuity into account.

Nurses who have been on strike for more than 40 days have voted to accept an agreement with Providence Health & Services, the Oregon Nurses Association said.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nearly 5,000 nurses represented by the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) at Providence have voted to ratify new contracts, ending a 46-day strike.

The strike, which is one of the largest health care worker labor actions in state history, included thousands of nurses at all eight Providence hospitals in the state.
