The countdown is on at Churchill Downs, where crews are completing an $80 million renovation project just in time for Kentucky Derby 151.

Rogers said the paddock area was expanded from 5,100 to 12,000 square feet and more than doubled capacity from 1,000 to 2,400 people. The area includes 3,600 new seats and standing room for 3,200.

But unlike Derby 149, which had a temporary paddock, Derby 150 will have something quite a bit bigger. “It’s almost like a Roman Coliseum type structure,” said Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers.
