Kentucky Senate Bill 2, filed by Republican Sen. Mike Wilson, aims to prevent the Department of Corrections from funding gender transition care for inmates. While Kentucky's Attorney General determined the state isn't obligated to provide such surgeries, the bill seeks to codify this into law.

The Kentucky Department of Corrections said last month that 67 state inmates are taking hormones to treat gender dysphoria. A Republican priority bill seeks to deny such medication.

Kentucky lawmakers have greenlit a bill prohibiting taxpayer money being spent on gender-affirming care in Kentucky prisons. Opponents of the bill argued the move is entirely political and targets a small number of people.

Under a GOP bill advancing in Kentucky, a reported 67 inmates would have to stop taking “cross sex hormones” if they are paid for with public funds.
