It’s Valentine’s Day, which means Portland is showing its heart once again. The anonymous band of cupids collectively known as the Valentine’s Day Phantom, or sometimes the Valentine Bandit, swept through the city in the dark of night before dawn Friday, leaving shop windows and buildings decorated with bright red hearts.

It is Valentine’s Day and that means the city of Portland is again covered in red hearts. Every Valentine’s Day since 1979, Portlanders awoke to red hearts plastered everywhere in the city from storefront windows to big banners on parking garages,

Kevin Fahrman, who placed hearts all over Maine's largest city for decades, was not revealed to be the Valentine's Day Bandit until his sudden death in 2023.
