Up to 1,400 people were killed in last year's anti-government protests in Bangladesh, most of them by security forces, the United Nations estimates. UN human rights investigators accuse the deposed government of Sheikh Hasina of a brutal response that they warn could amount to "crimes against humanity".

The United Nations report, which is based on an inquiry into the unrest in Bangladesh last year, estimated that around 1,400 protesters were killed, while thousands were injured.

Before Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a student-led revolution last August, her govt oversaw a crackdown with "hundreds of extrajudicial killings," the UN said.
