Forecasters say a disturbance in the Atlantic has a 40-percent chance of cyclone formation over the next week.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Gil was expected to become a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday but wasn’t expected to threaten land, forecasters said. The Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm is about 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) southwest of the Baja California peninsula of Mexico.

Weather warnings have been upgraded to amber for most of Scotland as Storm Floris bears down on the UK. The warning lasts from 10:00 BST on Monday through to 22:00 and warns of danger to life as damage to buildings and trees due to storm conditions is expected.

A 13-year old boy in Maryland died after being swept into a storm drainage pipe and drowned during a heavy rainstorm. The boy had been playing in floodwaters.
